When buying a new home or buying your first home, it can be tempting to choose a design with four or five bedrooms, just for the added space and the luxury. But how many bedrooms do you really need and are additional bedrooms worth the extra cost for you and your family? A few considerations to help you figure out the answers to these questions include your family size, if you plan to have frequent visitors and if you need another room for an office or business space. Sometimes people prefer to skip an unnecessary fourth or fifth bedroom, if it's going to be an unused space that they won't use, as it would require additional cleaning and added furniture. This can be costly, both financially and with your time. At the end of the day, it depends on your personal preference and your property investment goals. Here at McDonald Jones in NSW, we understand this and have a large range of designs to meet to your specific needs.

Are you Single, With a Partner, or Already a Family?

The first and most obvious consideration for first home buyers, is how big is the family moving in? Are you single, is it just you and a partner, or are you already part of a growing family? If you have a partner or live alone, you may still want extra bedrooms for future plans. If you have kids or grandkids, maybe a five bedroom house is your best option. Think about the present and the future, but be realistic, pragmatic and always take your budgets into consideration.

How Will You Use the Extra Space?

When buying a new home, some people prefer to opt for a larger living space, even if they don’t plan on having more children. This is to transform one of the bedrooms into a home office, a home gym, a children’s play space or another multifunctional living area for you or your family. However, a big bedroom that sits and remains empty is not something that anybody needs. Always remember that unused space may still require furniture and will definitely require extra cleaning.
