Building a new home can be an equally exciting and daunting process! There’s lots of decisions to be made, from location to house design, then fittings and more. When you’re building a new home, the best thing to do is to find a builder that will make the process as seamless as possible. At McDonald Homes, we’re experts in building homes and providing advice to those who are ready to invest in a newly build house. Building your new home should be a fun, and positive experience. Check out our 8-step guide so you can be well informed before you start.

Step 1: Choose Your Favourite Designs

New Homes

Find that blank dream board, and start imagining because this is one of the most enjoyable parts of the home building process! Browse our website and create a favourites account so you can save your favourite floor plans, facades, images and styles. Looking for more inspiration? There’s plenty to be found in display homes, magazines, online and in the inspiration section of our website. Wondering through display homes is often the best way to get a feel for which type of layout you prefer, and what sized home would suit your needs. You’ll also get a handle on which fixtures, appliances and extras you’d like to include when it comes time to choosing these for your own home.

Step 2: Find Your Land

Once you have a good idea which sized house will suit your needs, you can then consider searching a block of land. House and land packages may be available for your design choice, and this can offer you considerable savings, so hunt wisely and make sure you consider how big you’d like the backyard to be.

Step 3: Obtain Finance and Sign Contracts

Now you can envision your home, and you’ve chosen the block of land to make it happen, it’s time to investigate your finance options. Look into NSW government grants and discuss with your bank, mortgage broker or our MyChoice Home Loans team, the best way to finance your new home. Get together with your builder who will put your any contracts needed at this stage together.

Step 4: Let’s Get Creating!

Once you’ve chosen your house design, now comes another exciting part – style! This is the part where you can sit down with your MyChoice Design Studio consultant and choose colours, fixtures, appliances, features and much more. This will all be done comfortably in a central location, and the consultant will have plenty of experience and advice to provide if you’re unsure of what will suit your taste and aesthetics best.

Step 5: Follow the Build Along

Now it’s time to keep in communication with your construction supervisor and watch as your dream home is built, layer by layer. At various stages of the build, you’ll be invited by your supervisor to meet on-site and discuss the progress of the home. You’ll be able to make sure everything is going according to plan and be a part of all the action as it’s taking place.

Step 6: Here Come the Finishing Touches, So Get Ready to Move

Once you start seeing the final fittings being put on, you can start packing, as the big move won’t be far away. Your house will truly start to look like a home as the flooring, tiling and paintwork gets done.

Step 7: Final Inspection

Now that the house is complete, you’ll be able to walk through and check that you are completely happy with it. If there happens to be any minor adjustments, your building supervisor will be happy to arrange it either before you move in, or just after.

Step 8: Key Handover

The big key handover is always exciting. The key will be handed to you by your building supervisor and you’ll be able to enjoy the dream you created.
