Larissa from our South Coast office has recently taken on a crafty, creative project for her own home – beautiful painted pots for her indoor plants and herbs.

A fun activity for the whole family, Larissa has shared the steps to her simple yet gorgeous DIY project so that you can try this simple DIY yourself!
If you’re looking for a new and exciting way to pot your favourite indoor plants or herbs for the kitchen at home, or want a fun project to get the kids working on their creativity and green thumbs, perhaps this weekend you can try this great pot painting project!

An unglazed terracotta pot and saucer

All you will need is:

  • An unglazed terracotta pot and saucer;
  • All-purpose sealer;
  • Acrylic paint – colours of your choosing;
  • Paint brushes;
  • Clear top finish varnish; and
  • Your favourite herb or plant to pot!

Step 1

An unglazed terracotta pot and saucer

Ensure that you complete this potentially messy project either outside, or inside with plenty of floor coverings set up to avoid any accidents!
Start by giving your pot and saucer a good scrub clean and dry – then apply the all-purpose sealer with a thick brush and allow to dry; following the specific instruction on the sealer you are using.

Step 2

The theme I am going for is a blue sky.

Now is the time to get creative! I have chosen a sky blue paint for my pot, as the theme I am going for is a blue sky. Paint your pot using any brush you like, you may have to do 2 coats depending on how good the coverage of the paint is. Allow the pot to dry well.

Step 3

Once your pot is completely dry, add any special designs to your pot that you like.

Once your pot is completely dry, add any special designs to your pot that you like. You can theme your pot however you choose; rainbow, stripes or spots – the possibilities are endless! I have decided to add some clouds in my blue sky using a cotton bud and some white paint. Allow to dry.

Step 4

give the pot a clear top coat of varnish

Once the paint is completely dry and you are happy with your design, it is time to give the pot a clear top coat of varnish to ensure it stays looking its best for years to come! Apply the clear finish with a thick brush and allow to dry thoroughly.

Step 5

Just pop your favourite plant or herb in the pot and top up with soil to fill

You’re nearly done! Just pop your favourite plant or herb in the pot and top up with soil to fill. Don’t forget to water your plant too. Now sit back and admire your handy work! I used Basil in my blue sky pot and have also made a contrasting night sky pot with my favourite Hoya!

I hope this inspires you to go and let your creativity run wild!
