Autumn is the richest season. The falling leaves produce an unending palette of colours that continuously change. We experience a balance between both hot and cold weather, and the natural light is playful, but not overbearing. Australia's best photographers look forward to autumn for good reasons.

You can take advantage of the colour rich  surrounds of autumn, and incorporate the natural, leafy inspirations into the interior design of your home. Here are the latest trends to get you started:

1. Rich Textures in Deep Saturated Hues

“I love seeing rich textures in deep, saturated hues,” esteemed MyChoice Interior Design Consultant Lesa Pont said, “like eggplant, olive, navy and ruby.”

Lesa’s intuition is spot on; these rich colours reflect a change from the brightness of summer, towards a deeper, more luxurious colour choice for autumn.

2. Welcome Guests with a Natural DIY Wreath

Decorate your door with a wreath made from the falling leaves in your neighbourhood. Select vibrant coloured leaves as stand out tones in your wreath and leaves with more earthy tones as a background. This design piece will change with every visit as the leaves continue changing colour.

3. Utilise Rustic Woods and Natural Tones

Incorporating wooden furniture, picture frames and art pieces creates the feeling of the outdoors throughout your home. Complement these wooden pieces with natural tones, so as not to overstate or overshadow the wood's natural beauty.

4. Earthy Tones

Autumn leaves don’t only look spectacular because of their colours; it is their neutral background of earth and bark that helps them appear so varied and intense. You can use this technique in your home too. By including earthy tones in your decor, and carefully arranging them, you can create a background that makes your design focal points stand out - any colour will pop against a background of earthy tones.

6. Colourful Centrepieces

Use a centrepiece to add visual interest. For informal occasions try using a mixture of bright colours, much like the colour burst created by a fruit bowl filled with apples, oranges and mangoes; for formal occasions go for hues that are more subdued.

For a simple and inexpensive centrepiece that is DIY, fill glass jars with colourful, novelty items. You can use spices, beans, candy or coat the inside of the jar with a lick of paint.

7. Take a Leaf out of Autumn’s Book

Finally, take inspiration from the trees of autumn. They no longer need their leaves for winter - so they cut back. You can do the same simply by eliminating any clutter and excess furnishings that you have collected over summer and that are making your home look too crowded.

Take these autumn inspirations and use them as part of your interior home design to give your home a more natural feel for you and your family. Have an autumn design idea of your own or do you have a photo of your own autumn decor? Share them  on our Facebook page and keep the conversation going.
