Summer is one of the most beautiful times of year, with gorgeous weather, outdoor activities and a warm and vibrant atmosphere. Being the hottest time of year – especially in Australia – it’s important to have your swimsuit and sunscreen at the ready, as well as everything you need for a cool, calm and casual summer. It’s important to prepare your home too though, so here are 8 ways to create a summer haven at your abode.

1. Think Airflow

Before a heat wave hits, make sure your air conditioner has been serviced and the filter has been thoroughly cleaned. Turn the thermostat to “cool” and give it a test run to make sure it’s good to go for any hot days. Ceiling fans and pedestal fans are great for adding stylistic touches and increasing airflow without breaking the bank. They’re better for the planet too – bonus points!

2. Upstyle Your Interior Décor

Pack away any winter décor that gives off a warm, toasty vibe. Thick blankets, rugs and curtains can be swapped out for lighter options for an “airier” feel. Consider lighter colours around the home that don’t hold in the heat and furnishings such as sheer curtains, which are elegant and light but will still keep out the sun.

3. Add Colour Pops

Pack away the winter tones and have some fun with colour. Light, bright pillows, throws and pops of colour amongst the décor create a cool, vibrant summery look.

4. Brushes, at the Ready!

If you’re going to spend a lot of time outside this summer, make sure the deck has a fresh coat of oil and the house’s exterior paintjob is looking good and ready for the summer sun.

5. Bring in the Supplies

Summer means long days enjoying the outdoors, so make sure you’re fully supplied with sunscreen, aloe vera, swimsuits, portable sporting gear (plastic cricket stumps are a must-have for every Aussie family) and plenty of picnic blankets. Don’t forget to give your Esky and barbecue a good clean so they’re ready to go for any last minute beach call-outs.

6. Feature Furniture

Bright, cheerful outdoor furniture screams “summer” and is a relatively cheap way to impress your guests.

7. Let there be Light!

Drape outdoor lights on your patio for a warm, candlelit atmosphere. Dim lighting comes in great when you spend summer nights entertaining outdoors. And fewer lights mean fewer insects – but it’s still a good idea to keep a mosquito coil or citronella candle burning while entertaining outdoors for extra protection. (And don’t forget the Christmas lights!)

8. Stock the Freezer

Clean out your freezer and stock up on icy poles, ice cream and pre-prepared meals ready to go for hot days. Summer is a time for dipping into the stockpile, not sweating over the stove.
