Buying or building your home isn’t the end of the journey. You’ve got to customise it with furniture, artwork and other little knick knacks that really make it a home. No matter how modern your new home is, it’s always a nice idea to fit it out with DIY designs.

Lacking in inspiration? Here are a few great DIY home ideas.

Turn a Bookshelf into a Storage Bench

Have a tall bookshelf lying around? One great way to upcycle it is to turn it into a storage bench. This is perfect for children’s rooms or to place by a window as a reading nook. Simply lay the bookshelf on its side and measure what will be your bench top so you can get a plank of wood to fit over it. Cover this plank of wood in foam as a cushion and then staple a fabric of your choosing over the cushion. Then drill the plank from the bottom into the bookshelf. You can get baskets to place on the shelves to store things in.

Reclaimed Material Accent Walls

Another way to give your home that vintage or industrial look is to add an accent wall that is made with reclaimed materials. You can add this to any room of the house.

Two aesthetically pleasing materials you can use are brick and timber. Timber will give you a warmer, cosier feel, whereas brick can achieve that modern industrial look.

DIY Pallet Boards

We won't go into specifics for just one project that you can do with pallet boards because the list goes on and on. One of the best parts about pallet boards is that they’re essentially free. You can ask your local coffee shop or supermarket if they have any to spare, or there are even places that just want to get rid of their pallets if you’ll come pick them up.

Some DIY home design ideas for pallets are:

Headboard
Bed frame
Coffee table
Coat rack
Bookshelf

Repurpose an Old Ladder

Turning an old ladder into a shelving unit is probably one of the easier DIY projects you can do, but it looks great. The process can be as simple as you want it to be. Simply make sure the ladder still works and is sturdy, then sand down the wood to avoid splinters. You can stain or paint the wood to suit your style. Then find planks of wood or glass, whatever material you like, and balance them on the rungs of the open ladder. For extra stability, drill the shelves into the rungs.

If you only have a straight ladder, you can still stain or colour it however you like, then prop it against a wall to use as a blanket or towel carrier, or even a space to drape your magazines over.
