Homes in 2020

When we renovate or build new homes in 2017, we do so with the future in mind. It’s important to consider what kind of trends we think we’ll see in the future. That way, you get the most out of your investment by avoiding a home that’s dated, inefficient and lacking in innovation. Your home builder should be able to offer you ways to achieve this goal.

At McDonald Jones Homes, we strive to build all of our new homes with an eye towards the future. That includes looking at trends that are on the rise such as minimalist design and eco-friendly homes. Here are some of our ideas for what the homes of the future, or at least as far as 2020, will look like.

Eco-Friendly

This is a trend that is already on the rise in many homes throughout Australia. Homes are being built to be much more environmentally friendly in many different aspects. From choosing high efficiency, low energy appliances to installing insulation in the walls and ceiling, to using sustainable building materials, there is no end to the eco-friendly features that will be implemented in homes.

Some other ideas are:

• Rainwater harvesting systems and tankless water heaters
• Outdoor toilets
• Composting
• Eco-friendly lighting (LED, CFL)
• Solar panels
• Energy efficient windows

Minimalist Designs

Gone are the days of decadence and clutter in the home. Homes of the future will follow very minimalistic designs, favouring function over form. Less is more – a place for everything, and everything in its place.

From beds that are low to the ground in the Japanese style to clean, sleek architectural designs, minimalism is the new modern.

Steel Frames Instead of Wood

The future of house frames is in steel. Timber, the more traditional resource, is also unrenewable. Steel frame homes are also much more durable and long lasting than timber frames, in large part due to their fire and termite resistance. The design of steel frame homes will also be sought after in the future. Supaloc steel, for example, is precision engineered to be dimensionally accurate. This will give you those nice clean lines that really complete a contemporary building.

Smart Home Technology

Innovative technology will blend our digital and daily lives, making it easy to control your home's lighting, audiovisual systems, and heating/cooling systems from your smartphone.

In the future, sensors will be built into our countertops, furniture and appliances, anticipating our needs and allowing us to interact with our surroundings. This all makes for smoother daily activities.

Bring Nature Indoors

With all of the technology that is emerging around us, we’ve got to find a way to remain human. That’s why you’ll see a rise in indoor-outdoor flow in homes. From making more use of our outdoor spaces to decorating the indoors with plenty of greenery, we’re going to see creative new ways to bring nature into our homes.
