In summer you are constantly having get-togethers with your friends, whether it’s a trip to the beach, a walk together, drinks after work, or playing a round of golf. In winter, you can become more insular, with the cold weather inhibiting your social life. To kick-start your winter social festivities all it takes is a little thought - there are so many events you can host in your home to entertain your group of friends through, June, July, and August. Here’s a few you can start planning:

Dinner Parties

There are few things more fun than getting a big (or small) group of friends together and sharing a delicious hot meal and some drinks. Winter is the season for so many mouth-watering meals, from roast lamb to homemade pumpkin soup and sticky date pudding. Whatever you decide to cook, your friends will surely love you for it. Red wine is especially nice in the colder months, and will compliment most meals.

After you have served up a delicious meal and everyone's enjoyed a few drinks, there’s no need to end the night there. Continue the fun with some games like charades, poker, 500, or even some karaoke. Or simply put on some music, sit down in your comfiest chairs and reminisce, gossip and plan your future together as friends.

Christmas in July

When you celebrate Christmas on December 25th, it is usually too hot to really savour the hearty meals like roast turkey, ham, and hot custard that Christmas is famous for. Not to mention prices of prawns, ham, turkey and fish go through the roof. This makes Christmas in July is a necessity.

Put up the decorations, make some fake snow and pull out the Christmas crackers to turn it into a real celebration. You could even do a Kris Kringle!

Family Events

Is a family member's birthday coming up, or maybe an anniversary? Is your child, nephew or niece graduating? You could throw them a party. You don’t even have to do all the cooking - have everyone bring a dish. It’s a great way to make the most of your home, plus you can show off how well you’ve decorated your place!

Watch Sports with Friends

Whether it’s Friday night footy or an Olympic final, watching sports is ten times more fun with your friends. Set up your TV and get some extra chairs in your lounge - you don’t want any distractions during the game. Your guests will also love it if you make some themed snacks, so surprise them with some lollies in team colours.

Start a Book Reading Club

Winter is the best time to read. You can get all warm and cosy under your dooner and lay there for hours in warmth and relaxation. You can get away from the real world and get lost in your book. If all that reading leaves you craving some human contact, solve two problems at one by starting a book club. Gather a group of your book loving friends and all agree to read the same novel. You can gather weekly, fortnightly or monthly and discuss all the juicy details of your book, and your lives!

Hopefully with these fun ideas your winter social calendar will start to heat up. To share your favourite winter social soirees, leave a comment below or on the McDonald Jones Homes Facebook page.
